The County of Renfrew is planning major road work along the Petawawa River Bridge this construction season. Work is expected to start this month and continue into November.
Director of Public Works and Engineering for the County of Renfrew, Lee Perkins, says the project will require single lane closures over the bridge to Garrison Petawawa.
Perkins tells myFM digital message board signs have gone up along Petawawa Boulevard to let drivers know about the planned work.
Perkins encourages drivers to consider alternate routes, be patient and plan ahead as delays can be expected. He says the County of Renfrew is looking at doing night and weekend work on the bridge to get the job done faster.
The County of Renfrew budgeted $1.3-million in repairs on the Petawawa River Bridge in 2022. County Council recently awarded Bonnechere Excavating out of Renfrew the contract for work on the Petawawa River Bridge for $1.8-million. Additional funds from reserves will help pay for the additional expenses.
County Councillor and Chair of the Operations Committee, Tom Peckett, says the Petawawa River Bridge is a key piece of County infrastructure and this summer’s rehabilitation will ensure its viability for many years to come.
Additional road work is underway on the base that will further complicate the traffic situation. Festubert Boulevard, at the entrance to the non-operational side of Garrison Petawawa, will be closed to traffic, both ways, while the road is resurfaced. Access will be through the Frederick Gate or Montgomery Gate (located off Paquette Road) between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The road resurfacing at the entrance to Garrison Petawawa is expected to continue until sometime in July.
