The Renfrew County Catholic District School says class will be on as usual on Monday despite a planned strike by members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. The board says school administration supported by central staff will be working diligently to complete safety and cleanliness procedures ordinarily done by caretakers, who are part of the impending job action. Board officials say they’ll be monitoring the situation very closely and re-assessing at the end of the school day on Monday. The affected schools are: St. Joseph’s in Arnprior, St. John Bosco in Barry’s Bay, St. Anthony’s in Chalk River, George Vanier in Combermere, St. Mary’s in Deep River, St. Andrew’s in Killaloe, St. Francis of Assissi in Petawawa, Holy Name in Pembroke, Our Lady of Lourdes in Pembroke, Our Lady of Grace in Westmeath, Bishop Smith in Pembroke and St. Joe’s in Renfrew. The board’s eight other schools are not impacted by the CUPE job action. As for the public board, it has not yet cancelled any classes as a result of the strike, however the last update from the board said it was reviewing the announcement of the strike and would provide an update shortly. Parents are being told to check their website, Facebook and Twitter for updates. CUPE gave notice yesterday that its 55,000 members would walk off the job on Monday. The Union says it’s prepared to resume contract negotiations but says it will go through with the strike if there’s no resolution in sight.
