Police have arrested and charged a 14-year-old for allegedly having a weapon at school. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP says they arrested the teen on Wednesday after getting a call from Bishop Smith Catholic High School. Constable Shawn Peever says as a result of the investigation, the individual faces a weapons charge and a count of failure to comply with an undertaking. Peever says the weapon was not a firearm and not a knife or edged weapon, but couldn’t elaborate any further on the active investigation. The 14-year-old will have a court appearance on October 3rd.
The myFM newsroom has received several emails from concerned parents saying the school didn’t go into a lockdown. Director of Education for the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board, Jamie Perry, says information was disclosed to administrative staff, who quickly isolated the incident. Perry says police were contacted and based on the information disclosed it didn’t warrant a lock down. The Director of Education says they take into account the impact on the whole school community including the safety and well-being of students who are triggered by these types of situations. Perry adds the safe school and police school protocols were followed and there was no threat to staff or students. He adds information circulating on social media about the student having a gun is not true.
